The Love Project Thief

This morning I stopped by Celinda's house and she looked at me very seriously and she said "I have some bad news for you. You're not going to like this."
Alarmed, I quickly crossed over to where she had pulled a website up on her computer. "Somebody from NALIP stole your idea." she said.
The website she was showing me was called theloveprojectinc.com, and did indeed look like somebody had stolen my idea. The fact that it was somebody who was a member of NALIP, an organization that put's on a conference on Independent Producing that I had attended two years in a row, at which I had discussed and shopped around my project, The Love Project, made it seem especially suspect.
I first came up with the concept for The Love Project about four years ago after I was cruelly dumped and left heartbroken. I decided that I wanted to figure out what love was, and the best way to do that would be by making a documentary about it.
I sat on this for quite awhile, and although I liked the idea, the commitment of producing another feature documentary seemed daunting. I decided to start by creating short web videos that could later be used to put together a feature. My first love project video was posted on February 14, 2007 and sent out as a sort of special Valentine's Day card.
Soon after I bought the domain name loveproject.tv and began working with my friend Travis Holliday to create an online diary. I wanted the audience to feel as if they had found somebody's private journal, and Travis and I fought for a long time over whether the entries should be handwritten. I thought that they should be handwritten because handwriting is so personal, and the web is so impersonal that it seemed really important to give it this intimate touch. Travis thought that the search engines would have trouble finding my site if everything was handwritten.
Finally we settled on a compromise. The online journal would look just like an old, torn up notebook, and the first page would be handwritten. The other pages would have typewritten pieces of paper taped into the journal, to keep the effect of a handwritten notebook, while still being compatible with search engines. (Darn search engines hindering my creativity!)
Initially I thought that I would update my content every week.
This was completely ridiculous given that I was in the middle of producing two other independent documentaries while running my business, mantaining the indiecoop and raising my son. So I settled for just updating it every once in awhile. I worked on it whenever I could, I really enjoyed it.
At first this was probably about once a month, and has slowly dwindled down to hardly ever.
At some point I started including stories and poems as well as videos, and asking other people to submit their own love projects like Celinda's grandparent's 60th anniversary love project.
I have big ideas for the love project, but the truth is, I hadn't worked on it in awhile, and when I went to look at loveproject.tv today it gave an "Internal Error" message. (Travis is going to take a look at it tonight, and hopefully we'll have it back up and running soon...) Theloveprojectinc.com has a very slick, corporate looking site. Maybe it doesn't matter whose idea it is, it's who can implement it better that's important?
This is a tough one for me, I'm not sure how to handle it. I've had my ideas stolen before, and it's not a fun feeling. This time it's especially hard because I've already put so much work into this project, and I have so many big dreams for it. Knowing that somebody out there is doing the same thing on a larger scale puts a damper on my enthusiasm.
I suppose it's possible that just because the name and basic concept happens to be exactly the same, and just because I happened to share that particular project idea with the same group of people who started this other site, doesn't necessarily mean that they stole the idea. Maybe they randomly came up with it on their own. Maybe we can work together as one big happy love family...

You can continue doing what you were doing before.
The only factor that matters in any of this is YOU.
You create and publish your work and let people find what is valuable in it for them. In this case it may be your idea and what you had to say. Or it may the fact that YOU said it. Maybe it was just helping you find healing and now it's time to be done. See? The other guys don't matter.
Only poor people steal. Rich people always have another good idea.

Go to fewer conferences. Make another project instead.
