Cutting Through the Clutter: Getting Noticed Online

We all know that the internet is an amazing and wonderful tool full of possibilities, but how do we get noticed in the vast sea of content trying to get noticed?You could take off all of your clothes and run around naked in public, shoot a video of it and post it online. Put a link to your site, and wa-la! Lot's of traffic! Great! Okay, now go!
Oh, wait. There's more to this than just getting traffic now, isn't there?
The most important element to getting noticed is your content. Interesting, innovative, useful and funny content will get you noticed and set you apart from the rest. But just putting up great content isn't enough. You have to use a variety of tools and tactics to get your content so that it can be found.
I won't promise that you will get a #1 ranking in Google if you follow my directions, but I do have some tips and tricks that will help you get started.
Complete these exercises and you will be on your way to cutting through the clutter and getting noticed online.
Step #1 Develop Good Content
Get in touch with your inner rock star. What are you really good at? Stick to that, and use it to create great content. If you like to write, start a blog. If you love to act, create a video show. Got a band? You get the idea...If you can afford it, hire someone to help you develop your content, but even while working with a professional, it's important to remember and utilize your unique talents.
Step #2 Set Your Goals
Get out a notebook and a pencil and answer these two questions:
"What sort of impact do I want to have on the world?", and
"How is the internet going to get me there?"
This is very important, because if you don't know where you're going, then neither do I, and I can't possibly tell you how to get where you're going if neither one of us knows where that is.
Okay, now that we know where you're going, we can go back to the beginning and start our journey to get you there.
Step # 3 Create Keywords
You've answered the question of what impact you want to have on the world, now write down words that relate to this goal. Don't overthink it, just write the first things that come into your mind. I like to create a circle with my goal in the middle, and draw little lines out from it of related words.
Once you have a fairly large list of over twenty words, narrow your list down to those that absolutely define who you are and what you are trying to accomplish. These will be your keywords, and you will use them again and again.
Step #4 Develop Your Toolkit
Read through this description of my favorite sites, and you can use these to help you reach your goal. Don't forget to write down the ones that appeal to you.
My Favorite Sites and What to do with Them
Someone asked me this question at a talk I gave on Social Media, and it's taken me some time to think about this. These are the sites that I love, and use all the time. If there are sites that you love and use all the time, then absolutely use those sites in the same manner.
General Favorite
Craigslist is my absolutely favorite site hands down. You can use craigslist for nearly everything in your life. Please do not spam craigslist. There are appropriate ways and places to post your information, and that does not include posting something false that's really appealing just to get somebody to click over to your website. This might get you more traffic, but mostly it's just going to make people not like you.
Instead, use those keywords that you wrote down earlier. Do a search on craigslist for each keyword. This will clue you in to where people are posting and searching for your topic. Then, post in the appropriate places, which will most likely be in the "services", "community" or "discussion forum" categories.
Google is a close runner up for favorite sites, and obviously one of the most influential sites on the web. It is much more than a search engine, and I recommend that if you have never hit the "more" link on the google site, that you take some time to do that and check out all the different stuff that Google does.
I have used Google for everything from click ads, analytics, creating blogs and online groups and calendars.
Before we go more into depth on those other components of Google, I first recommend using those keywords you created by doing a google search on each of them. Take a look at the companies in the #1 spot for each keyword, and take notes. Is this a company that you can work with to achieve your goal? If they are not in direct competition with you, do they have an affiliate program that you can become a part of, or a popular blog that you could comment on? If they are in direct competition with you, ask yourself what they are doing that you do differently or better.
To better track your competition, you can set up feeds with iGoogle to automatically update with new content in the keywords of your interest. Be sure to put your own company in this list, so that you can stay on top of what people are saying about you!
Google Analytics will provide you with an embed code that you can put into your html code on your site, and this will tell you how much traffic you have had and where it comes from. This is incredibly invaluable information, and absolutely free, so there is no excuse for not doing this if you aren't already running analytics. Right now. I'm serious. Go there right now, and get your code! Good job!
Blogging
Blogger is my favorite site for hosting a blog. It's simple and easy to use, and you can add Google ads and make money on your blog for free. Wordpress is better for customization, so if you are planning on creating a blog that will be incorporated into your website like mine, then you might want to discuss with your web designer what the best site to use is. Blogger is also a part of Google. Whichever you use, blogging is an awesome way to keep your content fresh, increase your search engine rankings and keep you in touch with your audience. If you love to write, then you should be blogging. If you don't like to write, you can still blog, just be realistic with your goals. And remember, use those keywords to tag your blog posts so that people can better firnd you.
Now, ways to share your blog with the world:
Share This is cool because they give you a code which you paste into your blog, and it puts a little icon at the bottom of every blog post. If somebody really likes your post they can easily share it with their networks by clicking on the little icon and blasting off the link to their email list and social networking sites. You can try it right now by clicking on the link at the bottom of this blog post and sharing it with everyone you know. (Thanks!)
Blog Technorati is a site for bloggers to promote their sites, and check out cool blogs. Once you set up your blog, you should register it on sites like blog technorati and blog catalogue. Put a button up on your blog sidebar so other bloggers know how to connect to you, and set up an automatic ping system that will notify blog technorati every time you update your content. Oh, and favorite my blog while your there. ;^)
Social Networking
Facebook is great for personal networking. It is also very easy to create a fan page for a business, organization, or artist. This page can easily be updated via a twitter feed, so if you are using twitter and facebook, you can cut out time this way. Putting up a fan page on facebook is not a guaranteed method of gaining traffic, and can be time consuming to maintain. Think about what goals you are trying to accomplish before investing too much of your time into sites like facebook and twitter, and make sure that this time is well spent.
Ning I have created many social networking sites using ning, and it is an amazingly easy thing to do. It is simple to add events, photos, blogs, and groups. All of these features are also on facebook, and because more people are already signed up on facebook it might be easier to get new membership on facebook than a ning site. However, if you are looking for a social networking site to integrate into your main site, I would recommend ning because it is so easy to customize.
Linked In is nice because it is just for professional use. This is a great place to post your resume, boast about your accomplishments and reconnect with business associates. Because it's specifically for business networking you are far less likely to have someone you knew in grade school post something embarassing about you for all the world to see. You can also write and recieve recommendations, which is really nice.
Video Sharing
Everybody knows about YouTube, and while I think that Youtube is the best site for reaching the maximum audience, it is not one of my favorite video sharing sites.
Blip is my favorite site for posting my content because I can control the licensing, create my own customized show player to embed in other sites, and easily distribute my content to all the other popular video sharing and social networking sites. The content is also A LOT better on blip. Check it out, and if you have video content, post it with a nice fat bug in the corner with your website address on it, tag it with all your keywords, and don't forget to include a link to your website in the description.
Current has a different functionality than blip. Current is actually user generated news content, and if your story warrants it, current will actually broadcast it on their international television station and even give you money. Current is very cool. You can use it to share relevant news stories via articles, photos or video.
Step # 5
Okay, so now you know where you are going and how to get there. Take a minute to review your goals, and think very honestly about how much time and energy you are willing to devote to establishing yourself on the internet. It is really important to be realistic about what you enjoy, because if you hate writing and you start a blog, it isn't going to do you any good if you never write more than one post.
These are only the tools, the actual content is up to you. Remember, interesting, innovative, useful and funny content will get you noticed and set you apart from the rest. Running around naked in public might get you noticed too, but probably not by the people you are trying to attract.

I tried capturing in Mpeg2, mpeg4, and dvd formats (because I'm clueless which one is the right one) but the same thing happens in all of them. I'm using a plextor usb capture device. Any idea why it's happening or how to prevent it? The plextor is actually an analog capture device, could that be a problem, since the dvd is digital?
