Democracy Now!
The arrest of four journalists last week at the Republican National Convention, including Amy Goodman, host of "Democracy Now", is a clear sign that American Democracy is in grave danger of extinction.
If you have not already heard the story, it is pretty disturbing. Amy's producers were outside the convention covering a protest while Amy was interviewing delegates on the convention floor. One of the producers, though wearing a press pass and holding a camera, was knocked down and dragged on her face by the riot police. When Amy got a call that this was happening, she rushed to the scene and asked the police to see her producers. Although Amy was also clearly wearing a press pass, the police arrested her as well. The video on youtube is disturbing, and what is even more disturbing are some of the comments from ignorant Americans who think that because she is a liberal, she deserved it.
This is not a partisan issue, this is an American issue. Arresting journalists is a fear tactic, and one of the last steps in taking control of a free society and turning it into a fascist state. We cannot let this go unchecked.
Now is the time to pick up your pens, your cameras, your laptops and telephones. Now is the time to exercise what is left of our free speech, and speak up.
Whatever your political views are, I encourage you to think about what it means that a clearly marked journalist in America could be arrested and held in prison simply for doing their job, and I ask you to do something about it. Whatever it is, whether it is sending an email, making a phone call, writing a blog post, making a video blog, organizing a protest...whatever it is, do something that makes some noise. Give our government the message, we will not be silenced! We will not stand by and watch and wait without speaking out until there is no one left to speak for us, like that famous poem about Nazi Germany, "First They Came".
Now is not the time to wait for someone else to speak up for you, or to think that the next election will somehow "cure" all that has gone wrong. That someone is already trying, has been trying to speak up for us for years, and is not being heard. To turn the tide of oppression we must stand together, in unity, and join our voices together, and clearly say: we will not take this anymore. We have a constitution that protects our rights, and a government that is ignoring them in the name of National Security. There can be no "National Security" when our rights have been taken from us by our own government.
Please, please, for all Americans, liberal, conservative, red state, blue state, it doesn't matter, please stand up and say something.
